McAfee anti virus program is making my internet so slow?

Asked by: 58 views Computer Security

I just bought a new macbook pro and the internet was almost instant and very fast until today when i downloaded McAfee anti virus. Now the internet is so slow I was better off with the old computer.
Should i just delete McAfee and ask for a refund?
I don’t know what the point of buying a $ 1400 computer is if the internet is so slow it takes 15 minutes to load a page and I have to restart firefox/safari every ten minutes.
How do i fix this? Should I refund the computer?

I think your problem has nothing to do with McAfee.
McAfee occupy lot of resources like most anti-virus program do, but it will never slow down your internet connection. It is unusual for the internet to respond in 15 minutes. That’s abnormal.

Maybe you can try to uninstall MacAfee first to see if you can restore your internet.

It is actually OK to have macbook without antivirus. If you really worry about the security online, make sure have a Mac-based one. Hope you good luck.

First off, I agree that Mcafee shouldn’t effect the internet speed unless its auto updater is downloading a “large update file” every-time you login (sign online) … I have to be honest, I have NO CLUE what I am talking about as far as Mac’s go, and although I wouldn’t disagree with people that have experience with a Mac online … I am suspicious of the “you don’t need an antivirus on a Mac” view. .. I know a few years back “under the hood” was based on Linux, but there are so many e-threats online, I’d be there (other than firewalls) good “scanners” for Mac’s. (I am guessing though, I admit that)

Anyway, I agree with the poster that said (before you do this you may want to make sure your able to (aka “know how to”) reinstall Mcafee later) disable or uninstall Mcafee and see if that has any effect on internet speed

personally if it was a Windows PC, (or even Linux), I’d say run a firewall and see what is connecting when-ever you sign onto your internet. This may tell you what is “hogging” the connection.

    Good Luck,
