I made just about $23,500 last year and paid $2156 in federal income tax… does a refund of $477 sound right?

Asked by: 279 views Finance - Taxes

It seems like I got more back on my previous tax returns when I used to make less money and want to make sure this makes sense before I file…
I am single, no dependents, do not own a house (I rent), I don’t have any itemized deductions…

I take it you are single with no dependents.

You should get back more than that.

    That is a loaded question.
    Do you have dependents?
Do you rent or own a house.

So many questions, you should seek help from a pro.

It sounds right to me as long as you don’t have any deductions such as mortgage interest ,school loans, dependents , church donations, good will receipts, etc. Things that you could write off and give you a better refund. Since you have none then it sounds like a normal refund to me.

That doesn’t sound anywhere near what you should be getting back. You should be getting more. If you can’t seek professional help, you can always use the IRS efile for Free to do your taxes and HR Block which is also free. Both websites just calculate all amounts for you. Good Luck!

Sounds right. You may have received a small amount of EIC in the past, plus the $ 400 Making Work Pay credit is gone.
